“Defining Deviancy Down”

DanielPatrickMoynihan

In 1993, then Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan published a paper in which he coined the phrase “defining deviancy down.”

He was ringing an alarm about what he saw as a dangerous social unraveling as result of our redefining deviant behavior as normal, rather than doubling down on traditional standards of behavior.

I have always referred to this phrase when witnessing unacceptable behavior packaged in layers of normalcy and hidden behind a false façade of proper conduct.

In the world of healthcare organizations, there exists deviant behavior, similar to what exists in every other sphere of life.

Sometimes, the deviant behavior starts at the top of the company hierarchy and sometimes it takes up residence somewhere in the middle.

Typically, however, when there is accountability honesty and integrity at the very top, the trickle down effect is noticeable in employees at every level.

At Regency Nursing Centers, our Founder and President takes a strong stance on seeking accountability at every level.

He is pro-actively involved in every facet of his organization and has his pulse on the quality of care in each one of his facilities.

Because there is accountability and integrity at the top, it breeds accountability integrity, and ultimately – loyalty at every level.

Regency employees and staff are heralded and well regarded for their commitment, compassion and loyalty.

Our happy families and smiling residents are a testament to this commitment and sense of responsibility towards the well being of our families and residents.

Medicare and Medicaid Cuts Affect Nursing Industry

Mr. Tzvi Gross of our Administrative department shared an interesting article from yesterdays Wall Street Journal. The article which appears on the front page (April 15, 2013 – written by James R. Hagerty) is entitled “As America Ages, Shortage of Help Hits Nursing Homes.”

Hagerty devotes his article to pointing out the discrepancy between the exponential growth of the 65 years and older population who are projected to require nursing care, with the overall decline in nursing home staffing levels due to a number of factors, including low wages and cutbacks.

Recent draconian cuts in Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements have affected staffing because operators have seen their total revenues decrease.

Taking a scalpel to Medicare and Medicaid

Taking a scalpel to Medicare and Medicaid

Part of the problem is that there is currently no Federal standard for nursing-aide staffing levels and only about two-thirds of the states set minimum levels.

In my conversation with Mr. Gross, he expressed great pride that Regency Nursing Centers have kept up exemplary staffing levels despite these national cuts to our industry.

As a result of our exceptional ratio of aides to residents, our staff attrition and turnover rate is amongst the lowest in the Country. Our aides aren’t overworked or overtaxed and therefore have the ability to achieve excellence in their caregiving and compassion.

At Regency Nursing, we recognize full well, the importance in maintaining a healthy, happy and vibrant staff, which translates to a healthy, happy and vibrant resident!

Regency Nursing,

The Beauty is in the Details!

They say “beauty is in the details”.

At Regency Nursing Centers, our team has cultivated a tradition of caring and compassion which is manifest in the myriad details applied to our facilities and programs.

The examples are numerous, but the message is always the same.

We are totally consumed by the desire to provide our residents and their families the highest caliber of care, anywhere, period.

Our programs are fluid as they are diverse. We cater to every whim, every activity, every taste, every religion, every denomination and every expectation!

Do you wish to see a few examples of our attention to detail?

No problem.

Take a look at these two pictures.

These pictures were taken in our gorgeous Regency Heritage facility in Somerset, NJ.

The picture above depicts a custom made and pricey wall art which we affixed to a stairwell door in a portion of our facility to compassionately deter Alzheimers and dementia patients from attempting to exit. Is this our only mechanism? Of course it isn’t. Rather, it is an additional compassionate and meaningful detail we thought of, to protect the dignity of our residents.

Take a look at the next picture.

Family meeting room. Talk about beauty!

Family meeting room. Talk about beauty!

See this magnificent room. This room could pass for a dining area in the most opulent home, yes?

This is actually a family meeting room, which we custom built in our Regency Heritage nursing facility, to allow for private and intimate family gatherings with their loved ones. Whether to celebrate a milestone birthday (we have numerous happy and healthy centenarian residents living at our various Regency nursing homes) or to grieve in private, this is a detail we thought of, in order to go the extra mile.

Finally, here is a declarative statement of fact for you to ponder (and research):

At Regency Nursing Homes across new jersey, we go the extra mile for our residents and families.

Regency Park Hosts Centenarian Bash!

5/2/2013 – Today, we hosted an absolutely magnificent Centenarian event at Regency Park Nursing and Rehabilitation in Hazlet NJ. (View the photos below.. but you’ll have to read through this first ;-)

The event was organized by our very own Corporate Director of Marketing, Mrs. Marie Barnes.

Marie is beloved by the Regency family for her exceptional compassion and for her meticulous and precise dedication which she brings to her work. This was most apparent in today’s beautiful event.

Regency Park had the privilege of hosting the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders, who all expressed their appreciation for our exceptional program.

We had numerous centenarians (all of whom looked younger than their respective ages!) from our facility, as well as from Bayshore Healthcare Nursing and Rehab and other rehab facilities in the Hazlet/Holmdel area.

The scrumptious repast was masterfully prepared by our Chef, Aaron Anderson and we had live entertainment with music and song.

The centenarians felt so special sitting all bedecked in their custom made sashes and tasteful fresh rose lapels. Truly, this was a well deserved moment for them to shine surrounded by their grateful and loving families.

Our Regency staff and department heads were also on hand to welcome everyone to our home and to make everyone feel comfortable.

Our Administrator, Mr. Joseph Bernfeld, gave an emotional address, where he proclaimed that today’s unique event is more than just a “birthday to honor a milestone, it is also a celebration of life itself!”

Truer words were never spoken!

The event was capped off with a special dessert in the form of a HUGE custom made birthday cake for our centenarians (wasn’t just pretty, but actually quite delicious too)!

I am so proud of our staff and the entire Regency family.

Regency Nursing is truly a place where the “quality of care comes to life!”

We were also wriiten up on NJ.COM! Check it out!

Defining Excellence

Decades of Excellence!

Decades of Excellence!

One of the best compliments a proprietor can receive is the silent testimonial of a consistent customer. Someone who frequents an establishment over a lengthy period of time is typically a happy customer, since we assume they keep coming back because they are satisfied.

If this is true, then by extension, the penultimate compliment one can receive is to have the same customer affirm (and confirm) their happiness with a ringing, vocal endorsement of the establishment. Now, the proprietor needn’t assume because they have the facts.

I just got a call this morning from a family who is interested in our Regency Nursing and Rehabilitation facility because they had a friend who was with us for rehabilitation back in the 1990’s and was thrilled with our program!

In the 1990’s I was a young man who was still too immature to get married.

To receive a phone call from someone who validates our entire organization with a declarative endorsement of consistent excellence spanning decades, is incredibly exciting and exhilarating.

Regency Nursing hasn’t changed its focus. Our overarching philosophy has been the pursuit of excellence in every facet of healthcare.

Our relentless drive to achieve perfection is as old as our organization. It has been this way from day one and we continue to embrace the evolution of all technologies and medical advancements to grow and adapt with the changing times.

Mr. David Gross - Regency Founder and President

Mr. David Gross – Regency Founder and President

Flashes popped and smart phones bobbed up and down for position. Small children pushed their way past taller adults to get a better view. Gasps of admiration escaped from wide-eyed spectators as “You Make Me Feel So Young” played in the background.

On Sunday, May 19, Regency Jewish Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center, celebrated an event of epic proportions. 40 men and women, all of them centenarians, gathered together in the magnificent auditorium at Regency to rejoice in life itself!

They came from all across New Jersey and were treated to a spectacular program, with music, delicious food and great cheer, all courtesy of Regency Heritage.

Collectively, these heroic individuals represent a jaw dropping 4000 cumulative years of life’s experiences. It was simply amazing to be in the room and to witness this historic gathering!

I believe we were able to achieve a new world record for the books, since the last documented gathering of this nature was in the UK in 2009 and featured 29 centenarians.

Director of Marketing and Public Relations at Regency, Marie Barnes, worked tirelessly to put together this wonderful event and her efforts were well rewarded.

Regency Founder and President, Mr. David Gross, expressed his gratitude for hosting this event and for continuing to blaze a trail of excellence in healthcare. Indeed, Regency has become the standard by which others measure themselves.

We were also written up in the New Jersey Star Ledger!

Check it out.

Regency Nursing In Hazlet Hosts Memorial Service

Regency Park Nursing Center hosted a magnificent Memorial Service today, which was coordinated by our Director of Social Services, Rivka Greenspan and Life Choice Hospice.

The Memorial Service celebrated the lives of all of our dearly departed residents in 2012, whose memories we will always cherish in our hearts and minds.

Many families were in attendance for this poignant service and there was nary a dry eye in the crowd.

I was given the privilege of reading the names of our loved ones, one by one. This special touch celebrated the individualism of each and every one of our residents who all lived and loved in their own unique way.
There were poems read and candles lit.

Finally, the service was capped off with a delicious repast and socialization amongst our Regency family of residents and staff who shared fond recollections and warm memories.

Thank you to all of you who made this event so meaningful!
